The morning of Saturday, April 8th, 2017, 39 teams toed the line between the two SPROUTE races at the beautiful York River State Park in Williamsburg, VA.
The predicted weather looked perfect for both of our races, but Mother Nature had something else in mind for our folks.
90-minutes into the 8-hour race, an hour long wind shear event whipped up the York River into white caps and very tough paddling conditions mid-river for teams.
Unfortunately, this unpredicted high wind caused a canoe and one kayak to tip the racers into the water.
While assisting one of the tipped boats, another solo kayak racer got swamped and also ended up in the water.
Emergency rescue crews were immediately contacted and an overwhelming response by every possible water rescue organization in a 25-mile area responded and within 30-minutes.
The few racers in the water were recovered, a quick check of all people on the water was taken, and all accounted for and the race went on (in one fashion or another).
Most racers returned to the park and continued on with the Orienteering and Mountain Bike Bike Orienteering (MTBO) sections of the race amongst a beautiful remainder of the day.
The 4-hour race went off on-time and after lots of hiking and biking all around the park, everyone returned to the Finish to enjoy a great hot home-made meal, compliments of the famous SBB Cook Crew.
SBB Racing was excited to see a number of old friends come on out and race with us again.
Even greater was the fact that we had at least four 1st Time AR racers come on out and try this sport we all love so much.
We even had a couple teams made up of family members and kids.
In fact, family Team Burgillion worked together towards a 2nd Place Finish!
There were some fierce battles and some unique route decisions made by certain teams, and everyone trekked &/or biked to as many CPs as they could find in their allotted time.
A few teams opted to concentrate all their time on trekking or biking to play to their team’s best skill sets and it seemed to pay off, score wise.

We’ll be in touch soon with how our SWAG Raffle for our Sponsor Prizes will be drawn.
I think we’ll draw names as planned and either award them at the Summer Solstice or find a way to get them to the winners earlier.
A complete scoring section of all teams can be found on our Results page.
Congratulations to these 6 teams and to all of you who came out to battle the course, the park and each other. We look forward to seeing all of you and more at the June 17th Summer Solstice Races in the greater Smithfield, VA area.
It will be like Amazing Race meets Adventure Racing (In the woods, on the water and in the city)!
