2017 SBB Racing
Summer Solstice Results
Wow, what a race! After 12 hours of sun, rain, heat, sweat, mud & 50 CPs, 4 of the top 5 teams leap-frogged each other back and forth, all to finish within one CP value of each other. Just one more CP found or not could have reversed the order of finish! (see the close results at the bottom of this doc)
Top Finisher and race winner soloist Jesse Tubb blazed the way through trees & briers, dodging a few cars along the way as well as swam across the reservoir to cut down his time and insure a complete sweeping of the course in 11 hr 37 min. After the race, Jesse was overheard saying “That was one brutal and fun course”!
Not far behind was the Peleton of top teams all chasing each other and the clock throughout the course amongst the 5 or 6 different rain showers that occurred throughout the day. The rain never dismayed all the teams in the race, as they in AR fashion said, “Rain, that’s just another element of racing”. In fact, I think many actually welcomed it at times to cool them down. Our signature Time Trials section again played an important roll in the overall team standings.
Interesting course strategies played out with teams choosing to skip certain CPs while other teams skipped other CPs to try to maximize their point totals. In the end, any one of these top 2-5 teams could have moved up or down in the standings had their CP decisions went good or bad. Overheard at the post-race dinner from these and many others teams were comments like “That was one of the most well thought out and designed courses” and “Every element was considered” and “That was an awesome course and I can’t wait for what the STORM has in store for us!”
The 8-hr course teams were surprised to find they were being transported and dropped right into the middle of the 12-hr course so that all racers were now intertwined on the same course for the last 8 hrs of the race. There was a pretty good parity amongst most of the 8-hr teams here with Too Many Kids rising to the top and sweeping the course to victory.
No teams were left out as SBB Racing’s huge list of Sponsors always insured tons of SWAG prizes were to be raffled off to all the remaining racers. All racers and volunteers were treated to a great post-race meal of Fried or Grilled Chicken, 4-Bean Salad and Pasta Salad all prepared right before the race finish on-site to insure freshness. Dinner was topped off by Chef Ceil’s famous made-from-scratch pies for dessert.
